Claryn
Last updated: 19 September 2026
The short version
Claryn does not collect anything. It has no server, no account, no analytics and no advertising. Everything it works out about your photographs is worked out on your phone and stays there. You can check this: put the phone in aeroplane mode and the app works exactly as it does otherwise.
What Claryn stores, and where
Claryn keeps a private index on your device so it does not have to read your whole library every time you open it. The index is inside the app's own storage and no other app can read it. It holds:
- A description of each photograph and video — its identifier in your library, media type, dimensions, duration, file size, filename, album, whether it is a screenshot or a Live Photo, when it was taken, and a measurement of how sharp it is.
- What Claryn found — which photographs it flagged and why.
- What you decided — which frames you kept, deleted, shrank or held back, and when.
- Small rendered copies of your photographs, so the grids and previews draw quickly. These sit in the app's cache.
Claryn does not keep full-size copies of your photographs. Your library keeps the originals; Claryn refers to them by identifier.
Claryn does not read or store location data. Your photographs' GPS information is not available to it. The one exception is described below.
Faces, if you ask for them
Claryn can count how many faces are in a photograph, so that a picture of people is not put in front of you for deletion next to a screenshot. This never runs unless you turn it on.
When it does run, Claryn keeps, for each face: a rectangle saying where it sits in the frame, a score for how clear it is, and an opaque set of numbers used only to compare one face with another. That is not a name, not an identity, and cannot be turned back into a picture of anyone. It never leaves your device. Deleting the app removes all of it.
Deleting and shrinking
When you delete photographs through Claryn, iOS moves them to the Recently Deleted album, where they stay for about thirty days and where you can put them back. That timer is Apple's. Claryn cannot shorten it, extend it, restore anything from it, or erase anything permanently — only you can, from the Photos app.
When you shrink a photograph or video, Claryn writes a smaller copy into your library and sends the original to Recently Deleted. The copy carries the original's date, its place and its favourite mark, so that a photograph from 2019 does not come back dated today and stripped of where it was taken. That place is read from your library and written straight back into your library. It is never stored by Claryn and never sent anywhere.
Permissions
Claryn asks for access to your photo library, to read it and to carry out the deletions and changes you approve. If you grant limited access, Claryn works only on the photographs you chose, and says so.
You can change or withdraw this at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos. Without access, Claryn can see nothing.
Subscriptions
Claryn Pro is sold as a subscription through the App Store. Apple handles the payment, not Claryn. Claryn never sees your name, your email, your payment details or your Apple Account — it asks the App Store one question, "is this subscription active", and receives yes or no.
Buying, restoring or managing a subscription is the one thing that needs a network connection, and that connection is made by iOS to Apple, not by Claryn to anyone. Apple's own privacy policy covers it.
What is not here
No accounts. No sign-in. No email address is collected. No advertising identifier, no device fingerprint, no crash reporting, no analytics, no third-party SDK that phones home. Nothing about you or your photographs is sold or shared, because nothing about you or your photographs is collected.
Claryn's App Store privacy label says Data Not Collected. That is not a simplification.
Children
Claryn is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone, of any age.
Erasing everything
Delete the app. That removes its storage, the index, the thumbnails and the face data with it. There is no copy anywhere else, because there is nowhere else. If you want photographs back that you deleted through Claryn, they are in Recently Deleted in the Photos app for about thirty days.
Your rights
Rights of access, portability, erasure and objection under GDPR, the CCPA and similar laws are satisfied without anyone having to ask us for anything: your data is on your own device, under your own control. There is no operator-held copy to request, export or delete, and no request to make.
Changes
If Claryn ever changes what it stores or gains any ability to send something anywhere, this page changes first and the date at the top changes with it.
